2022 BMW X5 Interior Review — A Detailer's Take
Vernasca leather
Vernasca is a coated leather, so it is forgiving — most dirt sits on the surface finish rather than soaking in. A pH-neutral leather cleaner and a soft brush into the perforations, then a non-greasy conditioner twice a year, is all it needs. The perforated inserts on the seat are the trap: product pools in the holes and goes tacky if you over-apply, so it is a light-pass surface, not a soak.
Dye transfer from dark denim onto light (Cognac / Ivory) interiors is the number-one X5 complaint we see. It lifts with a dedicated leather cleaner if caught early; left for months it stains the finish permanently.
Piano-black and gloss trim
The gloss-black console around the iDrive controller and gear selector is a fingerprint and micro-scratch magnet — the single worst material in the car for showing wear. Never dry-wipe it; that is how the swirls get in. A detailing-grade quick detailer on a plush microfibre, wiped in one direction, keeps it glossy. Once it is scratched, only a plastic polish brings it back.
Wood, Alcantara and the headliner
The open-pore wood trim is matte and must stay matte — no dressings, just a damp cloth, or it goes blotchy. If the car was optioned with the Alcantara headliner, treat it like suede: a dry brush and a dedicated Alcantara cleaner, never a wet APC, which mats the nap and leaves rings.
The panoramic roof shade and upper pillars collect dust most owners never notice until it is pointed out — a quick brush-and-vacuum there is what separates a good detail from a great one on this car.
The good
- +Vernasca leather is durable and easy to maintain
- +Materials genuinely feel premium and age well with care
- +Most surfaces are surface-finished, so dirt does not soak in
The bad
- −Piano-black trim scratches if you look at it wrong
- −Light leathers stain from denim dye transfer
- −Alcantara and open-pore wood punish the wrong products
Verdict
A superb interior that rewards correct technique and punishes shortcuts. With the right products it stays showroom-grade for years; one dry-wipe of the gloss trim and it never looks the same. Worth having detailed by someone who knows the materials.
