2023 Toyota Corolla Interior Review — A Detailer's Take

FabricSofTex (synthetic leather)Hard-touch plastic

The 2023 Corolla has one of the most detailed interiors we see on the bench, simply because there are so many of them on the road. It is built to a price, and that shows in the materials — but it is also genuinely easy to keep clean, which matters more than plushness for a daily driver that lives through salt season. Here is what actually happens when a Corolla interior comes in dirty.

Seats: fabric vs SofTex

Base LE trims use a woven fabric that is durable but holds onto spills — coffee and road-salt slush wick into the weave and need a hot-water extraction, not just a wipe. Budget about 20 extra minutes per row for a fabric Corolla that has seen a winter.

SE and up get SofTex, Toyota's synthetic leather. It is the easier surface to live with: a damp microfibre and a pH-neutral cleaner lifts almost everything, and it does not crack like real leather in dry winter cabins. It does scuff with a sheen on the bolsters over time, which a light interior dressing evens out.

Dash and trim

The dash is hard-touch plastic with a light grain that hides dust well but grabs greasy fingerprints around the 8-inch touchscreen. A gentle APC at 10:1 and a soft detailing brush into the vents is the whole job — avoid silicone-heavy dressings here, they leave glare that reflects in the windshield.

The textured plastic on the doors and centre console is the one spot that traps dust in its grain. A dry brush before any wet product is the difference between clean and streaky.

Canadian winter wear points

The driver's footwell carpet takes the worst of the salt. Factory mats are thin, so by February most Corollas have a white salt tide-line on the carpet itself. Rubber all-weather mats are the single best thing a Corolla owner can buy — they turn a 30-minute extraction into a 2-minute rinse.

Door sills and the lower B-pillar collect brine transfer every time you get in. They clean up fine but are worth a wipe on every detail or the plastic hazes over a season.

The good

  • +SofTex trims are genuinely low-maintenance
  • +Dash grain hides dust between details
  • +Simple layout — few seams or crevices to trap grime

The bad

  • −Base fabric wicks spills and salt
  • −Thin factory floor mats let salt reach the carpet
  • −Hard plastics feel low-rent and scuff on the doors

Verdict

Not a luxury cabin, but one of the most sensible interiors to own through a Canadian winter — especially in SofTex. Buy all-weather mats on day one and a Corolla interior stays easy for years.
